What is Coherence?
What is Coherence and Why Does it Matter?
Coherence is a state of alignment, flow, and integrity within a system. It emerges when the different parts of a system are attuned, interconnected, in dynamic balance, and directed towards a joint vision. Coherence allows for resilience, creativity, and collective intelligence. It enables leaders to remain grounded amid turbulence, process complexity in connection with others, and take inspired action toward the emergence of new possibilities.
The Three Levels of Coherence
Coherence exists on three interconnected levels: self, group, and ecosystem. Without personal coherence, group alignment is fragile, and group coherence is a prerequisite for systemic coherence. Each level must be intentionally cultivated and requires complementary capacities, as one does not automatically lead to the next.
Self Coherence
Inner coherence is the foundation of impactful leadership in times of disruption. Such coherence is the ability to remain grounded, present, and attuned to one’s emotions, thoughts, and nervous system responses. It is in this grounded presence that we begin to hear the deeper voice of nature within — the creative, wild essence that mirrors the larger Earth body of which we are a part. Cultivating personal resilience, self-awareness, and deep presence enables leaders to access their full intelligence and to take courageous action with an open mind and, an open heart and courage, even in the face of crisis and collapse.
Group Coherence
Group coherence emerges when individuals attune to one another, fostering trust, psychological safety, and shared intention. When this attunement is grounded in a clear sense of joint purpose and vision, it creates not only connection but also direction. In this state, teams can navigate complexity with increased collective intelligence, creativity, and alignment. This level of coherence strengthens the relational fabric of organizations, enabling teams to work through challenges, process systemic tensions, and co-create meaningful action that is in harmony with a shifting context. We learn to walk between worlds together — guided not just by strategy, but by reverence, humility, and the intelligence of the collective field.
Ecosystem Coherence
Ecosystem coherence extends beyond the organization to include stakeholders, networks, and the broader societal context. It requires sensing and engaging with system dynamics, building alliances, and fostering emergent solutions that align with larger patterns of transformation. At this level, we also recognize our leadership as nested within a much larger movement — the evolutionary unfolding of life itself. In alignment with Earth’s deep rhythms, we become stewards of regenerative transformation.
